Lille wins but Angel Gomes suffers a horrific head injury
Lille wins by 2-0 against Reims
Lille rebounded after Angel Gomes was knocked unconscious by a collision of heads, defeating Reims 2-0 after a lengthy halt while the injured player was treated. The 23-year-old Gomes, a United academy graduate, was left immobile on his back after colliding with Reims midfielder Amadou Kone, who was sent off as a result of his challenge.
Players on both teams quickly summoned medical personnel, and the ex-England Under-21 international was finally stretchered off and sent to hospital. Bafode Diakite gave Lille the lead toward the conclusion of 34 minutes of additional time in the first half, and Jonathan David clinched the victory late on for a club that will meet Slavia Prague in the Champions League play-off. In other games, Monaco, last season's runners-up, defeated promoted Saint-Étienne 1-0 thanks to a Takumi Minamino goal.
