For the Germany and Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer, the Euros were a bitter finish. In the quarterfinals on Friday, Spain defeated Germany 2-1 with a goal late in the extra period. Neuer's hopes of leading Germany to victory in the European Championship likewise vanished with the loss to Spain. Whether Neuer plays on until the 2026 World Cup is a mystery. Neuer's long-term career at Bayern is far from assured in terms of club football. In December, he inked a one-year contract that would keep him at Munich till the conclusion of the 2024–2025 season.

Since they just signed Daniel Peretz and guaranteed Alexander Nubel's long-term future, Bayern are preparing for life beyond Neuer. Neuer has consistently made references to retiring at Bayern. The German goalie hinted that he may play in the Major League Soccer (MLS) once his Bayern Munich contract expires.
