With the victory over Borussia Monchengladbach, VfB ends the 2023–24 season with a club-high 73 points. To the delight of the 60,000 VfB supporters gathered inside the MHP Arena, it also propelled Hoeneß's team beyond Bayern Munich and into second position. On the last day of the Bundesliga season, VfB outperformed Borussia Mönchengladbach with yet another exhibition of free-flowing, offensive football.

In the twenty-third minute, Serhou Guirassy nodded home the opening goal for Sebastian Hoeneß's team. Within eight minutes, Guirassy doubled his goal and VfB's lead, volleying a left-footed effort past the inside of the post. Two minutes before halftime, the Guinean came dangerously close to completing his hat-trick, but the crossbar denied him. Although Gladbach had a strong start to the second half, the hosts quickly took back control of the game. Hoeneß's team secured a comfortable victory with a goal from Wooyeong Jeong (75') and Silas (83’).
