With just 10 men, Udinese stave off a late Lazio comeback thanks to goals from Lorenzo Lucca and Florian Thauvin, giving them a priceless and surprising win. The Aquile made a great start to the season, defeating Venezia 3-1 after Luca Pellegrini and Mario Gila were both injured in a car accident. Matias Vecino filled in at midfield. In their first game, Udinese managed a respectable draw away at Bologna; nevertheless, Alexis Sanchez was added to the list of injured players along with Damian Pizarro, Thomas Kristensen, and Gerard Deulofeu.
The first goal caused confusion because, while the offside flag was raised throughout the build-up, Lorenzo Lucca nodded in Florian Thauvin's cross, causing the whistle to go off. This gave VAR the opportunity to step in and determine it wasn't offside.
