Verstappen Sr backs Lawson to replace Perez

Jos Verstappen has expressed that he would not be “opposed” to Red Bull promoting Liam Lawson to partner his son Max amid Sergio Perez’s struggles in Formula 1.

Max Verstappen ended Red Bull's recent dry spell in Brazil with an impressive drive, charging from 17th on the grid to victory in wet conditions. His win nearly secures him the Drivers' Championship title, but Red Bull’s Constructors’ hopes were dented as Sergio Perez scored just one point.

Perez has accumulated only 19 points over seven races since the summer break, contributing to Red Bull’s drop to third in the Constructors’ standings. Despite his podium absence since April’s Chinese Grand Prix, Perez remains adamant he’ll stay alongside Verstappen in 2025. However, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko confirmed that senior management will review Perez’s future after the season finale in Abu Dhabi, noting, “Checo has a contract, but we’re evaluating the situation.” Team boss Christian Horner hinted at “difficult decisions,” while Verstappen Sr. endorsed Liam Lawson—who has impressed with two points finishes in three appearances—as a potential replacement, suggesting Max could benefit from a stronger teammate.
