Marseille a 2-1 home win over Monaco

Mason Greenwood’s late penalty gave Marseille a 2-1 home win over Monaco and lifted the team over its rival into second place in the French league on Sunday.

With a late penalty kick from Mason Greenwood, Marseille defeated Monaco 2-1 at home on Sunday, moving up to second place in the French league. In the 89th minute, Greenwood scored his ninth league goal of the season, tying Lille's Jonathan David and behind Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola by one goal. He sent the ball into the bottom left corner.

On goal differential, Marseille passed Monaco, who were all seven points behind PSG, the league leader. Monaco's loss revealed weaknesses in coach Adi Hütter's youthful, gifted, but inexperienced squad. Monaco led the Champions League match 2-1 until giving up two goals in the final six minutes, and they fell 3-2 at home against Benfica on Wednesday. Hütter's unpredictable team has lost four of its last seven games, including away at Nice after taking the lead once more and at home to struggling Angers, after being undefeated in their first 11 games across all competitions this season.
